God’s Particle or Future energy source for the entire mankind?
CERN experiments observe particle consistent with long-sought Higgs boson CERN, the Geneva-based European Organization for Nuclear Research, will soon turn into a Mecca for the world physicists with its pathbreaking research into confirming that there exists a new particle in the mass region around 125-126 GeV, which is scientifically known as Higgs Boson but for commoners the “God’s Particle” narrated by fiction writer Dan Brown in his novel “Angel and demons”.
ATLAS experiment spokesperson Fabiola Gianotti confirmed: “We observe in our data clear signs of a new particle, at the level of 5 sigma, in the mass region around 126 GeV. The outstanding performance of the LHC and ATLAS and the huge efforts of many people have brought us to this exciting stage, but a little more time is needed to prepare these results for publication.”
The next step will be to determine the precise nature of the particle and its significance for our understanding of the universe. What does it mean for a common man? To put it plain, what we see is merely 4 percent of the universe and what don’t see with our naked eye constitutes 96 percent and that’s what we will try to understand with the help of this experiment. Some may call it anti-matter.
Anti-matter is identical to physical matter but its particles have electric charges which are opposite to those found in normal matter. Anti-matter could be the most powerful energy source, if nurtured by our physicists. It can release energy with 100 percent efficiency, that means 98.5 percent more efficient than nuclear fission which has 1.5 percent efficiency. Anti-matter will create no pollution or radiation and just one drop of anti-matter could provide power to the entire city of New York for one full day.
Then why should it be produced somewhere 100 metres down the surface in a protected tunnel? Anti-matter is highly unstable and it gets charged whenever it comes in contact with absolutely anything, even air. A single gram of antimatter contains the evergy of a 20-kiloton worth atom bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945.
Until 2010, very small amount of antimatter has been created and the latest experiment has broken ground with its new antiproton decelerator or an advanced antimatter production facility that will create antimatter in much larger quantities. What is our future with this new particle in our hands? If harnessed, it would mean that we don’t have to rely on traditional energy sources like petrol or nuclear energy. With such vast source of energy at our hand, almost our daily life will become redundant.
Imagine, with this kind of energy you will have power round the clock at throw-away price and you can travel to outer space soon for holidays and mine the moon for rare-earth metals or new minerals. Sure, Dan Brown will come out with another fiction soon to see life with God’s Particle in our control.
