Kaamakoti Peetam

> The real history:
>
> 1) Adi Sankaracharya’s period is 788 – 820 AD
>
> 2) He established only four Aamnaya peethams in four corners of India and not five;
>
> 3) He disappeared in Kedarnath in 820 AD;
>
> 4) There was a branch math of Sringeri in Kumbakonam. It was relocated to Kanchi in early 1900 and hence known as Kanchi math since then only; (Elders in our family will call it only as Kumbhakonam math)
>
> 5) Kanchi Kamakshi temple is one of temples visited by Adisankaracharya;(and Kanchi swamigal was appointed only as trustee in the temple; the temple does not belong to kanchi math)
>
> 6) He never established a peetham there nor assumed a monastery for himself at Kanchi(so called moolamnaya peetha is not correct)
>
> 7) Had it been established by Sankara himself, the condition, area, location (at the corner of one road, 1 Salai street or so) do not prove its antiquity as compared to other 4 peethams which are very antique, covering acres of land for its use; as indicated in an earlier link, it would have been some veda patashala subsequently occupied by Kanchi math;
>
> 8) All the four Peethams have its own branch maths in several places for propogation. There are several branch maths for Sringeri math like Nelamau, Aavani, Sivaganga,etc and for Tamilnadu it could have been at Kumbhakonam. One external and independent proof is `Abithana Chintamani’ the earliest encyclopedia of Tamil literature which confirms the above fact ( Page 1604-`Sankaracharya Math’-2010 reprinted edition);
>
> Later kanchi gained popularity with the support of Tamilnadu and Kerala brahmins due its nearness and locational advantage at Kanchipuram and non-visit of Sringeri Acharyas for long time and started saying that it was established by Shankara.
>
> 9) Regarding the period of Adi Sankara it is only 788-820 AD. When Adi Sankara disappeared in Kailasam in 820, the news reached the Maharaja of Travancore only five years later. In order to give the highest respect to Adi Sankara who has taken birth in Kalady, Kerala and to immortalize the historic divine event, Maharaja introduced Kollam year in 825 AD. Kollam year for 2012 is 1187-88. Hence 825+1187 is 2012 which confirms the date of Sankara is 788-820 only.
>
> 10) Many authors, historians, pundits tried to establish that Kanchi Math was founded by Adi SAnkaracharya himself. Amongst themselves, there was no uniformity. There is one school which says, Kanchi is moolamnaya Peetham along with other four; another says, Sringeri itself was established by another Sankaracharya and Kanchi was established even before to substantiate their version of Sankara’s period as 2500 BC etc.
>
> 11) It may be shocking to know and news to many that Kanchi senior seer himself has told that Sankara established only four peethams ( no mention of Kanchi) in His Madras Sanskrit College lectures in 1930s and the speeches were released in book form which contained this fact upto 1950s edition. Subsequently, this portion has been altered in later editions.
